FAQs
Is my hair suitable for hair extensions?
Yes, unless your hair is very short. You
will need to make an appointment for a free consultation so I can assess your hair and discuss what look you are wanting to
achieve. Photos of your hair can also be sent via email for a quick answer as to whether extensions would be possible. Also, clients suffering from hair loss are not recommended as the tension of the extensions will make the situation worse.
Why get hair extensions?
Hair extensions are great for fine hair or for hair that never seems to grow. It can instantly add volume, length and body to your own hair. With hair extensions there is no chemical damage to your own hair- let your own hair grow to your desired length while you wear your extensions. Hair extensions can also add highlights to your hair.
What hair do you use?
My
hair is 100% Remy human hair. I use European hair mostly and I can source
other types of hair if required. My preferred hair is European as it's
the nicest hair to work with and the quality and wear is fantastic. My
hair extensions have a keratin protein bond that is applied strand by
strand by way of fusion or micro-ring method of application.
Will hair extensions damage my hair?
With regular maintenance, looking after your extensions and
following our care sheet, your hair extensions will not damage your hair. So long as you have replacement hair put in
when needed and bonds lifted regularly your own hair should not show
stress.
However if
you allow your hair to knot and tangle it will put stress on the bonds
and you could cause breakage of your own hair. Repeated violent brushing and yanking on your extensions could also pull and damage your own hair. Leaving the bonds to grow too long will obviously also put stress on the hair.
I know my own hair is completely undamaged, I believe it is
actually healthier as having hair extensions means I am not over
styling my own hair like I would normally in an effort to make it look full.
I have seen damage in the following cases:
-Very fine hair combined with poor diet, malnutrition, and/or prescription drugs.
Already excessively damaged and overcoloured hair
Negligence of recommended hair extension maintenance schedule.
Lifestyle abuse including:
Repetitive over tight ponytails that cause excess tension on the hair.
Activities that cause severe tangling without braiding the extensions (jet skiing, motorcycles, convertibles, etc.)
Excessive teasing and ratting of the hair with the overuse of hairspray.
Non-brushing of the hair usually during extended periods of bed rest or depression.
How much hair will I need?
This
will depend on your own hair and what look you are wanting to
achieve. If you are wanting the full 24" length you will require more
strands to achieve a thicker effect. If you hair is very thick or you
have a bob hair style, more strands will be required. The
number you require is very subjective to your individual hair type and
the look you are wanting to achieve. For example I have baby fine hair,
and my hair looks great with as little as 80 strands. However I can also fit
up to 160 strands on my head, which I do not wear because I find that amount unnecessary. I find the installation of 100 strands is
a comfortable start for a first time client. It is a introduction
to wearing and caring for hair extensions and they look great. This can be
discussed during your free consultation.
How long will the hair extensions last?
After 3-4 months, your hair extensions will have grown down your head, making styling difficult, and will need to be relifted back up your hair. The exact time need depends upon the individual and according to
ones natural hair growth. My methods of hair extension installation can
last up to 6 months or so, but
remember the bond will be growing out as the hair grows out. Any kind
of extension when grown out can put undue stress upon the hair and
cause breakage. Your at home maintenance will greatly effect how long
they will last.
Can I reuse my extensions?
Your Be Beautiful hair extensions can be reused for your relifts, and if properly cared for will last around 6 months or longer. This is subjective and down to the care you give your hair extensions versus the damage done to them. Hair that is constantly heat damaged, not conditioned, and allowed to tangle and mat will not last as long. For example I cause my hair extensions extreme damage- I wash, blowdry, straighten and curl them daily- and they still last 6 months.
What is the difference between human hair extensions and synthetic extensions?
With
Human hair extensions, you can treat them as you would your own hair.
You can wash the hair daily and use heat for styling. Blow drying,
straightening irons, heated rollers, and curlers can all be used on human
hair extensions.
Synthetic
hair is cheap for a reason. Any heat such as blow drying or
straightening will damage or frizz the hair, or even melt it! Synthetic hair is not
recommended if you want your extensions to look beautiful and natural but they are great for dreadlocks, which I do not currently offer.
How do I wash and style my extensions?
Always
wash your extension hair after swimming, as it will strip the moisture from your hair and make it prone to tangling.
Do not braid your
hair then swim in the sea, wear it loose or in a cap.
Wash
the hair in one direction from top to bottom, avoiding circular scrubbing, scrunching or matting
Condition your hair only at the ends, below the keratin bonds.
Blot your hair with
a towel, don't rub the hair dry, make sure to dry the roots thoroughly by
blotting with your towel
When
brushing your hair, start from the bottom and work your way to the top, hold the hair from the top so any strain is absorbed by your hand and
not the extension bond
Blow dry your hair extensions, then straighten after applying a heat protection spray for a beautiful straight style. For special occasions then use your straighteners again to create loose curls. Alternatively, brush your extensions out from the plait you wear while sleeping for loose waves
When styling, do not apply any form of heat too close to your keratin bonds as it will weaken the bonds
Clients are given a care sheet as a guide to
looking after their extensions.
Will you cut my hair after my installation?
Sorry, I am qualified in hair extension installation only. Please book
in with your favourite hairdresser for afterward to get your
extensions cut into a lovely new long style.
What hair care products should I use?
Always use good quality products, avoiding alcohol based products
Your hair extensions do not benefit from the natural oils of your scalp, so use shampoos and conditioners that are for dry hair, to add moisture to your hair
extensions
Using a deep conditioner once a week is also recommended
Use a heat protection spray on your hair extensions if you are using a blow dryer or straighteners
If you are using straighteners, we recommend using GHDs
How do I sleep with hair extensions?
Always go to bed with dry hair. A
loose plait is also recommended. If you go to bed with your hair loose you will end up with
tangles that will not only make your hair take much longer to style in the morning,
but could also damage your hair extensions.
If I want my extensions for a set date can you do them?
I
work on an appointment basis, so if you are wanting hair extensions installed for a particular event it is best that you book early to
avoid disappointment. Bookings can be made by phone or email. Remember to also book in with your hairdresser to get your extensions trimmed into a style.
When do I get my extensions removed or relifted?
Stage 1: A new application is close to the scalp. Extension is well
supported by the amount of the client’s hair it is attached to.
Stage
2: Some of the client’s hair has shed naturally and is trapped at the
point of attachment. Extensions are still well supported and easy to
brush and style. Client’s hair is still strong with plenty of unshed
hair still attached to the scalp. There is some growth away from the
scalp. Extensions maintenance is preformed
at this stage.
Stage 3: The client’s natural
hair has grown significantly, making it hard to style and brush with
out “catching”. There has been a decent amount of natural shedding,
causing the shedded hair to “hug” together. The client has a smaller
amount of their natural hair supporting the weight of the extension and
the shedded hair combined. Removal is preformed at this stage.
Stage 4: Danger zone. Excess
weight is pulling on just a few stands of hair; hair has grown from the
scalp several inches past a manageable state. Shedded hair is now
matting. Do not get to this stage!
